Finding a Familiar on the Astral Plane

Astral Projection and OBEs (out of body experiences)
An OBE is defined as the feeling of floating above your body. Usually, you can see your physical body before you as you float out of it and away. Many people experience OBEs without meaning to, usually during sleep. Often, the person may wake up in their body but be able to move their arms or legs. Any of these feelings may point to the experience of astral projection. You can project your spiritual self out of your body in order to journey to other places or to learn. Astral projection is a natural occurrence and you should not be afraid to try it. You will not get lost or lose your soul. When you leave your body, there is always a thin, unbreaking silver cord that connects you to your physical form.
Astral projection is easily accomplished during meditation. Most meditate in the sitting position in a comfortable chair. You can choose to lie down if you wish. Begin with your meditation. Make sure that you will not be disturbed. Cats, children, mailmen and telephone calls can bring you (sometimes rather violently) out of your astral experience. Imagine yourself in the protective white light and open all of your chakras. Imagine your center leaving your body. Move yourself and your consciousness into that light. Usually, the light is round as this is the easiest way to travel on the astral. Usually, you will not retain your body shape. Your body will remain as it is and function properly until you return to it.
Now that you have left your body, you can try moving around the room to get comfortable with your ability. If you feel afraid, just remember that you are connected to your body by the cord and can return any time. Afterward, you can travel onto the astral plane or you can remain moving about on the physical plane. These experiences can take you anywhere you want to go. Once you have become strong and adept, you can even meet others or arrange to meet your friends on the astral and discuss what each of you experienced afterward. Practicing with your meditations will make you stronger and you will be able to gather information from others on the astral plane as well as other beings and creatures. If you feel threatened on the astral plane, you can use what is called the "ocular voice." This is like a piercing, shattering note of a scream. It is not a sound any living creature can make, but when used in defense on the astral, it can shatter even the most dangerous of enemies. If you are disturbed during your OBE you will experience a speeding, whooshing sensation as your spirit is sucked back into your body. This will not harm you and can even be an exciting experience. Normally, however, you will return normally. Just imagine the silver cord that connnects you and travel back along it to your body. This should happen slightly fast, like a tape measure being retracted. You can control the speed of your return. When you arrive back at your body, enter through the forehead. Feel yourself filling your body, spreading into your hands and feet as though you were  putting on an old, well-fitting glove. Always be sure to keep a record of everything that happens to you during your OBE for future reference. Often, you will see symbols on the astral plane that you can review after you have finished to see what they might mean.

Familiars
Power animals are use by some witches as a sort of spirit guide. Spirit animals are not necessary unless you feel that you have an animal that you feel very close to. A power animal can be a pet or just any animal on the physical or astral plane. Your spirit guide can be determined in meditation. If there is an animal that you see often during your meditation, often it will be your spirit guide trying to speak with you. This guide does not have to be a real animal. In fact, the creature that chooses to make itself known to you may not be any animal that you have ever seen before. Speak to this animal and ask it what its purpose is. You can learn much from your spirit guide. They will tell you their name and will accompany you on your astral travels as well as in meditation and dreams.

If there is a time when your spirit guide seems to treat you as a stranger, snap at you or run away from you, it indicates that you have been doing something in life that is not akin to you. Changing your behavior for other people or trying to fit in will cause you undue strain and will not allow your guide to recognize you. Change your ways and remember that you should never change yourself for the benefit of others.

You hear about witches' familiars in stories of olde. They were believed to have been demons in the guise of animals such as cats, dogs, birds, or goats. Familiars were used to help witches with their magickal spells. Witches today also keep familiars. These are not demons, but animals to which a witch feels close. A familiar can be a real animal or it can exist solely within the mind.

Not all witches have familiars, but those that do share a very strong bond with them. A familiar is not just an animal that you keep as a pet. You may have many pets in your lifetime and have none of them end up being your familiar. A familiar is an animal that you share a very close bond with - almost as if you were soul mates. Familiars connect with their owners on a very psychic level.

How to tell a pet familiar:
If you pet is a familiar, you will begin to see them in your dreams. They may speak to you or serve as a guide. Later on, as you develop your relationship, your familiar will appear more and more in your dreams. Familiars are invaluable as spirit guides and guardians. Animals and people are both naturally psychic; some more than others. Familiars are often able to clue you in to things you don't pick up on. They can bring you psychic visions, teach you lessons, and guide you through your life.

There are also familiars that exist only within the mind on the astral plane. These are sometimes called spirit familiars or totem animals. These can be any animal and serve the same purpose as pet familiars. Spirit animals will come to you in your sleep and in meditation. They can also help you with problems you are having.

To Meet a Familiar on the Astral Plane:
If you wish to find a familiar, you should perform meditation exercises. I have read and tried many different meditations and I found one in particular very helpful.

Finding a Familiar on the Astral Plane
Begin your meditation the usual way. Cross the bridge and drop the stones into the stream. This time, when you travel into the astral plane, be sure to remember why you are there. Keep your eyes open for creatures. The animal you encounter will most likely be a worldly animal. One will approach you. You will not have to seek it out. You may be discouraged when you find that the animal that approaches you may not be your favorite. It could be any creature: a cat, fox, rabbit, bird, owl, horse, turtle or even an insect. Do not turn the animal down, even if you feel disappointed. A specific animal will have a specific lesson to teach you. When you have learned all you can from the animal, it will leave you. These spirit guides may remain with you for years or longer. Remember always to listen to what they have to say and explore thoroughly what they have to show you. Some of the more common animals seen are:

Wolf – knowledge and companionship
Owl – wisdom, silence, solitude
Turtle – patience, humility
Hawk – watchfulness
Horse – nobility and fidelity
Cat – cleanliness
Bear – strength and play
Fox – cunning, thinking through actions
Dolphin/Whale – love, compassion
Rabbit – nature and wariness
