Quilting

This Page is Currently Under Construction

Quilting shows on television are mainly geared toward those who already have experience quilting. This page is dedicated to those of us who are beginners or who would like their crafting simplified. If you are just starting out, it is much easier to begin with the simpler quilting techniques. This page has easy instructions and simple patches for both novices and practiced quilters. Quilting is time-consuming, especially when done completely by hand, but in just a few short days, you can have your first quilt finished. This page includes complete simple instructions and some great quilting links. Please enjoy!

Basic Terminology

Patchwork quilts are made up of many blocks. Below are examples of two types of blocks. Using a block template, you can create many different patch designs. Click on each of the blocks to see some examples of blocks created using them. All of these examples are beginner level and very easy to create. There are also four-patch blocks and twenty-five patch blocks. The more blocks you have, the more difficult the quilt is to create. If you are just starting out, you will want a quilt block with 1-12 patches.

These blocks are sewn individually. After all the blocks are made, they are sewn together to form a large quilt or you can connect them with longer strips of cloth. Some designs, like the sawtooth star to the left here, look better with strips of fabric between them. Other blocks create beautiful geometric patterns when placed side by side without the dividing strips. As you can see, the design is simple, with many different colored squares sewn together to create a pattern. When creating an easy beginner's quilt, such as this one, the work will go by fast and the quilt can be completed in a matter of days with a sewing machine. Hand sewn quilts will take longer. Your quilt can be made larger or smaller by adding more blocks or by making the size of the patches larger or smaller.

Sampler Quilts

Can't decide on just one block? Make a sampler quilt. A sampler quilt is a quit made with many patches, each one of them different from the next. A sampler quilt can be done all in matching colors, or a rainbow of patches.

http://www.craftown.com/quilt/hearts.htm - Here is a pretty and easy quilt you can make for a baby or a wall hanging. They would probably make pretty pillows, too. This one is a patchwork done in just plain squares.

How to Make a Cathedral Window Quilt - I like this quilt best done in black. These quilts are done by hand and are quite easy to do. You can take them on a trip or work on them while watching TV.
